With only three of 11 commissioners present and lacking a quorum, the board heard public comments but was unable to legally conduct business.
I will be live reporting the Detroit Board of Police Commissionerstoday at 3pm for #DetroitDocumenters
12:52 PM May 29, 2025 CDT
The agenda for this meeting can be found here:
Because they have not yet achieved a quorum, they are moving directly to public comment
First commenter, 91 year old Bernice Smith, related how she had a peaceful family dinner after church, and emphasized to all listening that one can get together with friends and family without carrying guns or arguing.
Minister Eric Blount commented about Commissioners carrying badges that look like police badges. Commissioner Willie Bell explained it makes it easier to identify themselves to both civilians and DPD personnel
A rep from the Detroit Towing Association called in to thank the Board for a recent event held to explain and answer questions about towing in the city
Next caller said they are running for office in November and bemoaned the serious delays in nearly all aspects of police business.
Chief Investigator responded that they are nearly through the case backlog and insisted they the caller’s characterization was inaccurate
Commissioner Bernard complained about citizen complaints being “kicked down the road” and said that the delays in dealing with complaints against officers is unacceptable
Comm’r Woods responded that they work tirelessly to deal with the backlog
Next caller praised efforts at the state level to ban certain chokeholds in law enforcement
The Board was not able to achieve a quorum, and abruptly adjourned the meeting at 3:41pm
